Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
The raw material is the fruiting body of Hericium erinaceus, commonly known as Lion’s Mane mushroom or Hou Tou Gu. Unlike whole mushroom powder, which retains the broader composition of dried mushroom tissue, this ingredient undergoes aqueous extraction, concentration, filtration, and drying to increase the relative level of extractable polysaccharides. It is therefore positioned as a concentrated mushroom extract rather than simple fruiting-body biomass.
Commercial grades are differentiated by polysaccharide concentration, allowing formulators to adjust extract loading and standardized carbohydrate contribution without changing the underlying mushroom source. The 40% grade provides a concentrated option for mainstream formulation work. Total polysaccharides and β-glucan remain separate analytical specifications and should not be treated as equivalent purchasing parameters.
The concentrated extract is suited to dry and water-based formulation systems where defined polysaccharide content is required. Its water-extracted carbohydrate fraction hydrates more readily than untreated mushroom material, while residual extract solids can contribute haze, suspended particles, mild mushroom notes, and sedimentation in liquid applications.
