Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
The raw material is the mature fruit of Gardenia jasminoides J.Ellis rather than gardenia flowers, leaves, or whole milled fruit powder. Extraction concentrates soluble and dispersible fruit constituents before drying, differentiating this ingredient from Gardenia Fruit Powder. It is also commercially distinct from purified geniposide, genipin, and dedicated Gardenia Yellow or Gardenia Blue color ingredients.
Ratio extracts are selected when buyers require a defined concentration of botanical starting material. The primary grade serves general botanical-extract sourcing, while 20:1 provides a more concentrated ratio option. The 4:1 and 5:1 grades support projects requiring lower extract concentration. Marker-controlled versions use selected iridoid markers or chromatographic profile criteria when analytical consistency is more important than extract ratio alone.
The extract has a characteristic yellow-brown color and mildly bitter botanical sensory profile. It is straightforward to use in dry supplement systems, while aqueous applications require evaluation of wetting, dispersion, haze, sedimentation, pH compatibility, and color contribution. Particle size and powder flow are particularly relevant during capsule filling, tableting, sachet filling, and premix production.
