Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
Malva sylvestris is common mallow, a species in the Malvaceae family. This ingredient should be distinguished from Chinese mallow extracts based on Malva verticillata and marshmallow root extracts derived from Althaea officinalis. Essencefield material is produced from M. sylvestris aerial parts, including leaf and flower material, and is supplied as an extracted dry powder rather than simply milled herb.
Commercial grades are differentiated primarily by extract ratio. Essencefield offers 5:1, 10:1, and 20:1 specifications, with 10:1 positioned as the core grade for general formulation projects. These ratios describe the relationship between starting plant material and finished extract; they do not represent the percentage of mucilage, flavonoids, or another individual constituent.
The extract contains a complex matrix rich in mucilage-associated polysaccharides and flavonoid constituents. These components influence wetting, hydration, dispersion, haze, and mouthfeel in water-based systems. The powder also has a characteristic herbal sensory profile and a natural light-brown to brown-violet appearance, making prototype evaluation important in pale powders, beverages, chewables, and topical formulations.
