Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
Salvia miltiorrhiza root contains two commercially important constituent groups: hydrophilic phenolic acids and lipophilic diterpenoid tanshinones. The grades on this page are standardized against a phenolic marker and are therefore distinct from Danshen root powder, generic ratio extracts, purified phytochemicals, and materials standardized to Tanshinone IIA.
The 10% and 20% grades address different formulation and procurement requirements. For an equivalent theoretical marker contribution, the 20% grade requires approximately half the extract weight of the 10% grade. This can be useful in capsules, tablets, sachets, and multi-ingredient formulas where total botanical loading or available formula space is limited.
The extract has a natural brown botanical appearance with characteristic herbal and mildly bitter sensory notes. Dry supplement formats provide a straightforward application environment, while liquid systems require more formulation development because the complete extract contains a broader botanical matrix in addition to its hydrophilic phenolic fraction.
