Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
Hamamelis virginiana contains tannins and other polyphenolic constituents that vary according to the botanical material used for extraction. Leaf- and bark-derived materials can differ substantially in their phytochemical profiles, making source definition an important part of ingredient identity. This distinguishes a properly specified witch hazel extract from a generic botanical powder identified only by common name.
Available grades follow two main specification approaches. A ratio grade such as 10:1 describes the relationship between botanical starting material and concentrated extract, whereas a standardized grade defines a measurable constituent group such as total tannins. These values are not interchangeable: a 10:1 extract does not inherently represent 10% tannins.
The dry format is used mainly in skincare and personal-care products requiring a concentrated botanical ingredient. It contributes a natural yellow-brown to brown color and a polyphenol-rich profile. In aqueous systems, wetting, clarity, sedimentation, and compatibility with proteins, cationic materials, metal ions, surfactants, and rheology modifiers are relevant during formulation development.
