Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
Berberine belongs to the protoberberine group of isoquinoline alkaloids. High-purity material differs substantially from whole Coptis, Phellodendron, or Berberis powders and from multi-component botanical extracts because the commercial identity is centered on a purified individual alkaloid rather than a broad botanical constituent profile. Botanical or manufacturing origin should therefore be confirmed from the selected specification rather than inferred from the ingredient name.
Commercial grade selection is driven primarily by assay and chemical form. Current markets commonly offer 97% and 98% grades, with 98% HPLC representing a principal high-assay sourcing specification. The chloride form corresponds to CAS 633-65-8. Buyers should also confirm whether assay results are expressed as received, on a dried basis, or on an anhydrous basis where this distinction affects specification interpretation.
High-purity berberine is used mainly in concentrated dietary supplement, nutraceutical, and functional formulation projects requiring a defined alkaloid assay rather than a broad botanical profile. The ingredient has an intense yellow appearance and pronounced bitter character. Limited aqueous solubility means that dissolution, precipitation, color contribution, taste masking, and distribution within the finished matrix should be evaluated during development.
