Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
Derived from Camellia sinensis leaf, this ingredient belongs to the gallated catechin family. Its chemical structure differentiates it from epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin (EC), and epicatechin gallate (ECG). The purified material is therefore commercially distinct from whole green tea powder and broad-spectrum extracts containing multiple catechins, caffeine, and other naturally occurring tea constituents.
The defining commercial attribute is the compound-level assay. A ≥98% grade enables procurement and formulation teams to calculate the target catechin directly instead of deriving its contribution from a total-polyphenol or total-catechin specification. This makes the purified grade particularly relevant when ingredient identity, assay consistency, and controlled inclusion levels are more important than the broader phytochemical profile of green tea.
The material is used in concentrated nutritional products, dry premixes, functional formulations, and selected topical systems. Dry applications benefit from the controlled assay and relatively low inclusion level, while aqueous formulations require closer attention to dissolution, pH, oxygen exposure, processing temperature, and hold time because solution conditions can materially affect stability.
