Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
Clematis chinensis Osbeck root is the defined raw material for this extract. It is more specific than the broader traditional name Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma or Wei Ling Xian, which can encompass additional Clematis species and root-and-rhizome material. The extract also differs from whole root powder because selected constituents are extracted and concentrated before the material is dried and milled.
Commercial grades are differentiated primarily by extract ratio rather than a single standardized active assay. Lower-ratio grades maintain a closer relationship to the starting botanical solids, while more concentrated grades allow formulators to reduce ingredient loading. The 10:1 grade occupies the central commercial position. TLC serves as an identity fingerprint rather than a quantitative measurement of the extract ratio.
The ingredient is mainly used in dietary supplements and multi-ingredient formulations. Its concentrated format reduces the quantity of root-derived material required compared with direct botanical powder. The natural brown-yellow color and characteristic herbal profile are readily accommodated in capsules, tablets, sachets, and opaque powder systems, while liquid applications require evaluation of wetting, dispersion, sedimentation, color, and flavor.
