Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
Longan extract is derived from the aril / fruit flesh of Dimocarpus longan Lour., rather than the seed or outer pericarp. This distinguishes the ingredient from longan seed extract, pericarp extract, and whole longan fruit powder, which represent different raw materials and compositional profiles. The finished product is a concentrated botanical extract rather than simply dried and milled fruit.
Commercial selection is primarily based on extract ratio and finished powder characteristics. 10:1 is the principal sourcing grade, while 20:1 provides a higher-ratio option. Essencefield’s current range also includes 4:1 and 5:1 extracts for projects requiring a different botanical-to-extract concentration basis. Extract ratio describes concentration during processing rather than the percentage of an individual constituent.
The finished extract has a characteristic light brown to brown color and fruit-botanical sensory profile. Its fine powder format supports dry blending, encapsulation, and powdered nutrition systems, while water-dispersible behavior makes it relevant to beverage applications. Formulators should account for natural color, flavor, and suspended botanical solids when selecting an inclusion level.
