Ingredient Profile & Common Uses
The extract is derived from Stephania tetrandra root rather than whole-plant material or simple botanical powder. Current botanical taxonomy accepts the species as Botryodiscia tetrandra (S.Moore) L.Lian & Wei Wang, while Stephania tetrandra remains the established commercial and pharmaceutical name. Extraction concentrates soluble botanical constituents into a dry powder while retaining a broader root-derived chemical profile.
Commercial sourcing is centered on 10:1 and 20:1 ratio extracts, with 10:1 serving as the principal grade. The two specifications provide different concentration levels while remaining broader botanical extracts. They are commercially distinct from highly purified tetrandrine, which is better treated as an individual phytochemical rather than as another ratio grade of the same ingredient.
The powder is used in botanical ingredient development, natural-product research, analytical projects, and selected cosmetic formulation work. Its alkaloid-rich composition makes actual formulation testing important, particularly for wetting, dispersion, sedimentation, color contribution, and sensory impact. These characteristics should be assessed using the selected extract format rather than inferred from isolated tetrandrine.
